Evonik: All Methacrylates Plants on Stream in Shanghai

Evonik (Essen / Germany; www.evonik.com) has started up all production units at its new EUR 250m integrated methacrylates site at Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP) in China. Production of “Plexiglas” PMMA moulding compounds began in November 2008. The start-up makes Evonik the “largest supplier of methacrylate specialities in China," said Patrick Wohlhauser, CEO of chemicals arm Evonik Degussa.

The complex, where 300 people are employed, encompasses a 100,000 t/y plant for methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) and the derivates methacrylic acid, butyl methacrylate, hydroxy ester, along with speciality monomer products and the PMMA moulding compounds and thermoplastic methacrylate resins.
